City in Semi-Finals
Glasgow City made it safely through to the Premier League Cup Semi-Finals today after their Quarter Final 3-2 win over Kilmarnock.
City, having just returned from their heroic performances in the UEFA Women’s Cup dominated the entire match, but despite playing the match camped in their Ayrshire hosts half, struggled to put the game out of sight.
Two defensive errors exacerbated by a poor pitch at Newmilns, caused a few nervous moments as City gifted Kilmarnock their only efforts at goal over 90 minutes. Killie welcomed their chances with open arms, converting both, but City’s quality elsewhere on the pitch shone through as they progressed to the Semi’s with relative ease.
First on the scoresheet for City was striker Ruesha Littlejohn who flicked a Katharina Lindner shot into the back of the net from close range. Littlejohn then got her second of the day when she controlled a cross in the box before turning and slamming the ball into the back of the net. A Killie defender tried to get in the way, but the deflection was unable to stop the net bound shot.
Goal number three came from Lindner who drove down the right hand side taking on a number of defenders before hitting an excellent shot low and hard into the keeper’s bottom right hand corner.
Boss Peter Caulfield was happy to be in the next round. He said, “Our objective was simply to win and make sure we were in the Semi-Finals and we have achieved that. Overall, we dominated play from the first moment to the last and I lost count of the number of attacks and corners we created today. Credit to Kilmarnock who defended very well and never let their heads go down despite the pressure they were under. This was a very poor pitch that we played on today and perhaps that aided our defensive lapses as turning was difficult, but we let Kilmarnock into this game, gifting them two goals out of nothing. We need to make sure that our opposition create the chances for themselves and we don’t do it for them in future.”
