City go top of the League
Glasgow City defeated Celtic 5-1 at Lennoxtown today to go top of the Premier League table.
City got off to the perfect start when midfielder Leanne Ross hit an unstoppable shot from 30 yards into the roof of the Celtic net to put her side one nil up. City then doubled their lead when Jane Ross volleyed into the back of net after Celtic had headed a City free-kick clear.
City were then denied the opportunity to go three nil up when Celtic centre-half Jenny Beattie stopped a goal bound shot from Jane Ross on the line with her hand. City were awarded a penalty and Beattie was sent off for a deliberate hand ball. City striker Ruesha Littlejohn stepped up to take the spot kick but saw her effort go wide of the goal, much to the relief of the hosts.
City continued to push for their third goal and eventually go their reward when Megan Sneddon hit a low drive into the bottom of the Celtic net.
Striker Kat Lindner was then denied when she saw her effort hit the bar and away to safety.
Sue Lappin had a clear chance to put her side 4-0 up but uncharacteristically pulled her header wide after she had been found unmarked in the Celtic box.
Half time 3-0.
In the second half, City continued to dominate and Lappin made it 4-0 slotting coolly past Johnstone in the Celtic goal after being sent through one on one with the Celtic keeper.
Celtic pulled a goal back when Pauline Hamill raced on to a long ball and placed her effort into the corner of the City net.
Despite the set-back City continued to create chance after chance and went on to hit the cross bar another three times as Celtic tried to keep the score down.
The Glasgow side did eventually get goal number five when Jane Ross cut in from the right hand side and hit a fantastic effort high into the back of the Celtic net.
City Boss Peter Caulfield reflected on the result. He said, “I felt we dominated the game and the girls were fantastic. My only disappointment was the number of chances we created, but yet we only managed to score five. However, if asked before the game if I would be happy with 5-1 away to Celtic, then of course I would have been delighted. We now have another four tough matches and we will go away and prepare the best we can for these.”
