City go eight points clear
Glasgow City took an eight point lead at the top of the Premier League today following a 5-0 away win over Kilmarnock.
With snow overnight, it was feared this game would be defeated by the weather, but an early morning pitch inspection ruled the game on. Conditions were however very difficult for both sides due to a heavy pitch and strong winds throughout the match.
Despite the difficult surface and weather City started the game well and took an early lead through Katharina Lindner. A through ball from full back Leeanne Campbell met the diagonal run from Lindner who shot well across the face of the goal into the bottom corner. It was not long before City were on the score sheet again when Ruesha Littlejohn acrobatically hooked her half volley past the Killie keeper from inside the penalty box.
City then scored a fantastic third goal when an excellent free kick from Leanne Ross was met brilliantly by Sue Lappin who steered her volley into the back of the net. Killie were then provided a life line when the referee awarded a penalty for a hand ball by Campbell in the City box. Up stepped Jo Cooper for Killie but her effort hit the top of the bar and away to safety.
Kilmarnock were made to pay for their miss, when shortly after, City midfielder Leanne Ross made it 4-0 when she scored direct from a corner kick.
In the second half City created more chances than they did in the first, but were only able to find the net on one more occasion, this time striker Lindner getting her second of the day following good play with Littlejohn and Lappin.
At 5-0 City boss Peter Caulfield was more than happy but would still like to see some improvement in front of goal. He said, “Playing Kilmarnock is always extremely difficult. They are organised and compete well and this is always a tricky pitch to play on. Scoring five away from home and keeping another clean sheet is excellent, but we had 26 shots today and only scored five. We did hit the post twice and their keeper made some good saves especially in the second half, but I would like us to be more ruthless. However, I cannot complain. If you had offered me this result before the match and the chance to go eight points clear I would have taken it, so I am delighted. “
