City frustrated in the Capital

Glasgow City left the Capital City tonight extremely frustrated after their 1-1 draw with Spartans.

Glasgow City went into this match full of confidence after dominating the Cup Final against Spartans last weekend and defeating Kilmarnock 9-0 on Thursday. However, it was not to be their day today as City failed to take their chances and were denied on numerous occasions by an extremely disappointing level of refereeing.

In the first half City should have opened the scoring through Suzanne Lappin but her header hit the bar from only a few yards out. Ruesha Littlejohn agonisingly saw her right foot shot roll inches past the post and Lappin blazed over from a Lindner cut back.

Overall it was a disappointing first half for a City side who can and have been playing so much better, but they should have put the game out of sight in the initial period.

In the second half, City improved considerably, but as more chances came, they just as quickly passed by. Jane Ross was found guilty on two occasions of not doing better inside the 6 yard box and Leanne Ross and Rachel Corsie saw their headers rise inches above the bar, when it may have been easier to score.

However, perhaps the biggest culprit of the day sadly was the young Assistant who repeatedly raised his flag in clear error, most noticeably when Lindner raced clean through and slotted past the out rushing Hutcheson in the Spartans goal.

With ten minutes remaining, City finally took the lead they deserved when Ruesha Littlejohn fired home after good play from Clare Gemmell set the City striker up. However, as City unnecessarily pressed for a second goal a long ball over the top set Debbie McWhinnie free to hit a fine lob over Angie Livingston in the City net.

City Boss Peter Caulfield was noticeably frustrated. He said, “This feels like a loss. Spartans were celebrating as though they had won the match which I think highlights how the game went today. We just never put our chances away and it cost us very, very dearly. We lost a bad goal at the end and to lose a goal in the last few minutes of play is criminal. We have lost two points which we did not deserve to do, but we will pick ourselves up and get back on track very quickly. Today was no disaster, it just leaves less room for error in what is becoming a very interesting title race.”
