Glasgow City ease into 3rd round
Glasgow City made it a clean sweep into the Scottish Cup 3rd Round, with the First Team 9-0 comfortable winners over Tynecastle and youth side Glasgow City Girls going into the hat, after opponents Stonehaven forfeited their tie.
With the City Girls game called off at the last minute, it was only the First Team who took to the field at Glasgow Green against First Division Tynecastle.
Today was the first game back for the Premier League champions after the long winter break. However, the freezing conditions made both sets of players feel the winter break should have been a little longer.
Starting as strong favourites, City controlled the match from start to finish and their impressive scoreline could have been all the greater but for some poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping by the Tynecastle keeper.
5-0 up at half time through goals from strikers Ruesha Littlejohn (2), Kat Lindner (2) and Jane Ross (1), City extended their advantage in the second half with Littlejohn adding another two to her tally, with Danni Stewart and substitute Jane Brown getting one each.
City boss Peter Caulfield was happy with his team’s performance.
He said, “We had a job to do today and we achieved that. We controlled the match from start to finish and every player contributed. It was our first game back after a long, long break, so we got to blow away a few of the cobwebs. We also managed to make three changes from our usual starting line up and it was great to see everyone come in and play well. We now have a really tough game against Dundee United next weekend, so starting tomorrow, we will begin our preparations for that.”
