City defeat Hamilton to stay top

Glasgow City maintained their lead at the top of the Premier League tonight following a 3-0 win over Hamilton Accies.

City started the match brightly and took the lead through midfielder Leanne Ross after she rounded the Accies keeper and slotted home from a narrow angle. The home side had the ball in the net once more after Katharina Lindner also rounded the keeper to score. However, a controversial decision from the Assistant ruled the goal offside, keeping Hamilton in the game.

The match then progressed for the next 75 minutes in one fashion – City maintaining possession and control but unable to break down a strong Hamilton rearguard. It was a good defensive display from Hamilton as their team worked tirelessly to keep themselves in the game and combined with poor finishing and choices in the final third, City’s lead remained at 1-0 going into the final five minutes of the match.

The pressure did finally however pay off and City were able to relax when a good through ball from Ross was finished superbly by striker Lindner inside the penalty box. Linder then returned the favour, when she played in Ross to get City’s third and her second of the match.

Manager Peter Caulfield was happy with the result. He said, “We were very comfortable at 1-0, but the longer the game went on without us getting the killer second, the more nervous myself and clearly the players were becoming. Before the match, I would have taken 1-0, so to finish as strongly as we did in getting three goals in total, I am delighted. At this stage of the season, it is all about results. There is no margin for error. Three games to go and we must keep our concentration. We know what we have to do.”
