City defeat Aberdeen

Glasgow City cemented their place at the top of the Premier League following a 5-0 win over Aberdeen in the Granite City.

Having moved to the top after a win over Kilmarnock midweek, City maintained their 100% record and now sit two points ahead of nearest rivals Celtic and five points ahead of third placed Spartans.

City took the lead on the half hour mark when Emma Fernon scored direct from a City corner. Six minutes later Jane Ross doubled the advantage for the away side converting from the penalty spot after a Dons defender stopped a goal bound shot with her hand. Having prevented an obvious goalscoring opportunity, the Aberdeen full back was red carded, leaving the visitors reduced to ten.

City then scored a further twice in the first half, but both were chopped off by the referee.

Half time 2-0.

In the second period City continued to dominate the game with wave after wave of attack, but strong winds, a bumpy surface and a defiant home side prevented City scoring again until the 60th minute, when yet another City set-piece was this time bulleted home by midfielder Sue Lappin.

Ten minutes later and striker Kat Lindner scored City’s fourth with a fine strike from inside the box after being set up by Suzanne Malone.

Goal number five came from substitute Leanne Ross who scored with a free-kick with five minutes remaining.

Head Coach Eddie Wolecki commented, “We asked the girls to maintain their excellent run and we finished with another clean sheet , five goals and three points, so overall I am satisfied. However, if we are really honest, the conditions made this a very unenjoyable match for the spectators. We could have and should have done a lot better at times and really punished Aberdeen, because this was entirely one way traffic. But we won comfortably and are top of the League, so I cannot be too harsh on the players.”
