Four City players in A squad

Four Glasgow City players are in the Scotland squad which will today take on Georgia in a crucial World Cup qualifier in Tbilisi.

Jane Ross, Leanne Ross, Emma Fernon and Rachel Corsie are all in Anna Signeul's squad for the match in Group 3 in what is a very complicated World Cup Qualifying competition, where qualification from this stage leads to a play-off and then potentially another play-off to finally reach the end goal of the World Cup itself.

That aside, our girls are focused on a win and having won their first two matches against Greece and Georgia respectively, National Boss Anna Signeul insists we go into the away match with Georgia full of confidence.

She said, “The girls are really looking forward to the match and starting the campaign again. The domestic season has now started so the girls have a few games under their belt. The Cyprus Cup at the end of February was also great preparation for us, so we are ready for this game now.”

Scotland defeated Georgia 3-1 at Tynecastle last October, but Signeul would like her team to be better this time.

She said, “We cannot take anything for granted. We have already defeated Georgia, but that does not mean an automatic three points away from home. We need to work hard for the full ninety minutes and put in the effort required to get the result we want. If anything I want the players to step up from the last game. To be more composed around the penalty box and move the ball quickly.  I want the game to be fast, perhaps something we should have done a little better in the last match. Apart from that, we will play our usual 4-4-2 and hopefully the girls can perform the way I know they can, and we can return home with another vital three points.”

Late news for the Georgia game: Rachel Corsie, Emma Fernon and Leanne Ross will start the match, with Jane Ross on the bench.

Returning from Georgia, Scotland have another crucial qualifier at home to Bulgaria on Thursday 1st April at the Falkirk Stadium, kick off 7.30pm.
