Fitting finale for City Slickers
Glasgow City welcome newly crowned Scottish Cup winners Hibernian to Glasgow Green this Sunday, in a match which City boss Peter Caulfield, knows is going to be the title decider.
He said, “We always thought it would come down to this match and it has proved to be the case. However, whichever way we look at it, it is still just another game that we need three points from, like every match so far this season.”
Caulfield is no doubt trying to play down the importance of the game for the benefit of his players, but the reality is that with Hibs managing a 1-0 win over Aberdeen last Tuesday, the Edinburgh side sit five points behind leaders Glasgow City, but with a game in hand. With Hibernian expected to win this game in hand over second bottom Queens Park, Caulfield is fully aware that a win for his side will secure the title.
He said, “Three points is essentially all we need to lift the championship on Sunday. A draw would take us to the last game of the season, but we don’t want that. We play for a win every weekend and this Sunday will be no different. We are preparing as normal and the girls are focussed. Sunday is a game to enjoy against a talented Hibs team and hopefully come the final whistle there may be a few celebrations.”
This season has been a great advert for the women’s game in Scotland with the Premier League title going right down to the wire. To have our two top teams still capable of lifting the trophy with just over a week of the season left, is a credit to both Glasgow City and Hibernian and the rest of the Premier League who have challenged strongly along the way.
Sunday’s big finale kicks off at 2pm.
