Exciting Third Round draws for City sides
Glasgow City Premier League side have been drawn out of the hat to host rivals Celtic in the Third Round of the Unite Scottish Cup. City Girls also have a home tie and face a difficult match against Premier League side Boroughmuir.
City’s first team and Celtic have a curious habit of drawing each other in the Cup, having been tasked to play each other in every Cup competition since Celtic established themselves in the women’s game.
Last season they met in the Premier League Cup Quarter Final, with City progressing through to the Semi-Finals after a 1-0 win at Barrowfield. Later on that year, they met again in the Scottish Cup with Celtic gaining revenge coming out 4-2 winners.
This season the two sides met once more, but in the Semi-Final of the Premier League Cup. City’s 3-1 win that day put them through to the Final which they then went on to win against Spartans at Forthbank stadium last November.
Now, the two Glasgow teams meet again with City gaining the advantage of a home tie at Glasgow Green.
City Girls face their first ever Premier League test having been drawn to play Boroughmuir Thistle. Having earlier this season won the SWF League Cup, City Girls got the better of a number of First Division sides, but a Premier League outfit will be a whole new test for City’s youngsters.
Commenting on the draw, First Team boss Peter Caulfield remarked,
“We seem stuck together when it comes to the Cup draws (referring to City v Celtic). Over the past year and a half every match between ourselves and Celtic has been highly entertaining for both sets of fans and I am sure this one won’t be any different. It is a shame two such big sides have drawn each other so early in the competition, but I have no doubt the rest of the teams in the Cup won’t be too disappointed.
Our young Girl’s side also have a tough challenge against Boroughmuir, but I wanted them to face a difficult test. They are young and the aim is to improve and matches against higher opposition like Boroughmuir can only do wonders for their development.”
Both Third Round Ties will be played at Glasgow Green on Sunday 22nd February. Kick off 2pm.
