Wolecki reflects on Final

Glasgow City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki took time out today to reflect on Sunday’s impressive 5-0 win over Rangers in the Unite Scottish Cup.

“Sunday was a massive game for us”, commented Wolecki. “We last won the Scottish Cup three years ago and for a club like Glasgow City, that is too long a wait. Going into the match on Sunday we were strong favourites, but Rangers got to the final on merit knocking out some good teams”, he continued.

First Divisions Champions Rangers defeated Premier League title contenders Spartans 6-5 after extra-time in a thrilling semi-final win and confidence would have been high going into the final according to Wolecki.

He said, “Rangers would have been feeling good going into the final. It was a massive win over Spartans, who are a talented side. To score 6 goals against them, when considering they have only conceded 16 league goals in 18 games this season was impressive, so we knew their confidence would be high. However, our girls were all well prepared and although we could have done a lot better at certain times, it was a solid performance and one of our most dominant of the season.

“Looking at the statistics from the game, they are unbelievable. Throughout the entire 94 minutes played, we had 43 efforts on goal. 17 of those were on target, 14 were blocked on route to goal and 12 were off target. Our goalkeeper touched the ball a whole three times in the first half and four in the second. Rangers had only one effort on our goal the entire match and it was a shot from distance which was well off target. Statistics can tell me a lot and it proves just how hard the team worked to get a result on Sunday.

“I cannot fault the effort and commitment of this team and we are flying at the moment. Confidence is high, but then why shouldn’t it be. The girls put the effort in and they are gradually getting the rewards.”
