City top League with win over United

Current Premier League Champions, Glasgow City, kept up their winning streak with an impressive 11-0 win over Dundee United at Glasgow Green today.

Sue Lappin opened the scoring for the home side after getting her head on to the end of a Megan Sneddon throw in. Donna James was next on the scoresheet on twenty minutes, when she beat the off-side trap and slotted under the keeper.

City made it 3-0 when Lappin scored again, once more heading home from a City set-piece.

City and Scotland Under 19 midfielder Emma Mitchell got her first of the day and City’s fourth when she cut inside from the left to score past the United keeper.

On the half hour mark Lauren McMurchie came on for the unfortunate striker James who had to go off injured despite a sprightly start.

Jane Ross made it 5-0 after getting on the end of a brilliant pass by Megan Sneddon and shot across the keeper to open her own account for the day.

Number six for the home side was an own goal from United’s Lorna Young as she deflected in a shot from City’s Rachel Corsie.

Jane Ross scored again to make 7-0, once more firing across the keeper and into the back of the net.

Half time 7-0.

After the restart, City continued where they left off with Rachel Corsie scoring in at the far corner with a strike from the edge of the box.

Soon after, striker Lisa Evans made it 9-0, driving in from wide and slotting under the keeper.

Emma Mitchell then got her second and arguably best goal of the day. Great link up play between Mitchell, Emma Fernon and Sneddon saw Mitchell hit an unstoppable shot just inside the box and into the back of the net.

The young midfielder then got her second hat-trick of the season in only her third start when she scored again after stroking home a Lappin cross to make the final score Glasgow City 11-0 Dundee United.

Returning to the top of the League, City boss Peter Caulfield commented, “I was delighted by many aspects of today’s game, not least the way we put Dundee United on the back foot from start to finish. We passed very well at times but can still do so with more tempo  I feel. I was delighted with the quality of our younger players. Eilish McSorley was very strong at the back, Lisa Evans was a constant threat in attack and Emma Mitchell who had a very strong midfield performance and capped that with her second hat-trick of the season. Lauren McMurchie, who is coming back from injury got her longest spell on the park this season and showed great calmness in possession and picking passes. She started many of our attacks and it was fantastic to see her getting closer to full fitness. However, great credit goes to all the players today for a really good team performance. “
