City stay top going into break
Glasgow City go into the summer break top of the table after a resounding 9-0 win over Inverness.
City controlled the match from start to finish in what was a very convincing and impressive performance from the Champions.
The league leaders took the lead through Leanne Ross after some excellent play from the visitors saw Jane Ross send in a low cross which was converted by her namesake at the back post.
The advantage was doubled with one of the best goals of the game. Good link up between Kat Lindner and Sue Lappin, saw the City pair tear the Inverness rear guard apart, with Lindner finishing with a low strike into the bottom corner.
City made it 3-0 at half time when a deflected shot from Rachel Corsie flew into the back of the net after a City corner.
Half time 0-3.
Inverness keeper Kim Jappy had made a number of fine saves in the first half to keep her team in the game and she continued to be in outstanding form in the second, trying to stem the flow of City attacks. However, despite the best efforts of Jappy, City went on to score another six goals in a slick second half performance.
Leanne Ross scored City’s fourth. Linking up again with Jane Ross, Leanne Ross beat her player and curled a left foot strike into the bottom corner. Number five came from Kat Lindner. The City striker met an inch perfect pass from Megan Sneddon, took a touch and finished well.
Leanne Ross then got her hat-trick with her best strike of the match. Kat Lindner went on a mazy run before passing to Ross at the edge of the box and she fired a powerful strike into the top corner.
Substitute Emma Mitchell continued her own fine goalscoring form, netting City’s seventh, with a low strike on goal. Lindner also got a hat-trick and City’s eighth of the day with a fine left foot curled shot into the top corner.
Mitchell finished the scoring striding forward from midfield and then unleashing a power strike into the roof of the net.
Full time 0-9.
Boss Peter Caulfield was delighted with his side’s performance. He said, “I was really pleased with the effort and commitment of the girls today. We passed the ball really well and with great tempo. They did everything we asked of them and probably more. The movement off the ball was exceptional and the quality of the passing more than matched it. We now go into the break top of the table and I couldn’t have asked for more than that.”
