City stay top with a win at Rangers

Glasgow City retained their position at the top of the Premier League after a 6-1 win away to Rangers today, at Petershill Park.

Inside the first five minutes Glasgow City showed their intent with a couple of excellent moves which created good goal scoring chances which they failed to convert.

It wasn’t long before the first goal arrived, however, when Kat Lindner was first to react to a Sue Lappin knockdown to drive the ball past Lucy Cook in the Rangers goal from inside the 6 yard box.

Sue Lappin was playing an instrumental role in the early stages and a brilliantly weighted pass to Leanne Ross allowed the striker to set herself for a strike from 20 yards which flew into the top left hand corner of the Rangers net.

City were in complete control of the match now and 3 minutes later Jane Ross tapped home at the back post after great combination play down the left side involving Leanne Ross and Kat Lindner.

The domination which City was enjoying at this time failed to produce further goals as they struggled to find the decisive final pass their play deserved and as the half was looming to a close Rangers stunned the City when a series of poor tackles allowed Rangers Lisa Swanson to advance to the edge of the City box and fire home over Laura Williamson

Stunned by this goal, City were back on the attack and after Jane Ross was taken down wide on the left, Sue Lappin powered home a header from the resulting free kick.

Half Time 4-1

The second half started as the first had left off with City adding 2 goals in the first five minutes. Both strikes came from City striker Kat Lindner; the first after Rangers keeper Lucy Cook had spilled a Sue Lappin header and then the goal of the game when after great build-up down the right hand side, Kat Lindner and Leanne Ross worked a great one-two inside the Rangers box to open up the defence and allow Lindner to slot home for her hat trick.

The game had a really physical edge throughout and City were forced to withdraw three players with injury during the second half, the third of these injuries forcing reserve goalkeeper for the day, Claire Johnstone, to take the field as an outfield player as City struggle for fit players at the moment.

Rangers were extremely committed throughout but were not able to create any kind of goal threat throughout the second half and City were pushing Rangers back towards their own goal consistently but a number of near misses and a few saves from the Rangers keeper ensured there was no more scoring.

Glasgow City Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki, was delighted with the win but left frustrated by elements of the performance, and said, “We had plenty of the ball today and in the early stages of the game looked like this was going to a great day for us and while it was in terms of the scoreline, we let too many passes go astray, especially in the second half, and a lack of patience meant we didn’t keep the ball well enough.

‘We are pleased with the three points from a very competitive game but there are many things to work on over the coming weeks.”
