City stay top

Glasgow City cemented their place at the top of the Scottish Women’s Premier League with an 8-0 win over Boroughmuir in Edinburgh today.

City got off to a flying start opening the scoring on 46 seconds. Straight from kick off, City won a corner and full back Emma Fernon’s pin point delivery found centre half Rachel Corsie, who headed home at the near post to put her side in the lead.

Ten minutes later, City made it 2-0. Another corner from Fernon was hit right on target to Sue Lappin, who headed home with ease.

Mid way through the first half, City and Scotland midfielder Leanne Ross put her side three goals up. A poor clearance by the Boroughmuir keeper went straight to Ross and she had the intelligence to control and lob the ball back over the keeper and into the empty net.

Half time 0-3.

Fifteen minutes after the restart and Corsie had her second of the match. A cross from striker Lisa Evans could only be palmed down by the Boroughmuir keeper and Corsie was sharp enough to ensure the loose ball went into the back of the net.

Lisa Evans then turned goalscorer. Leanne Campbell played a one-two with Jane Ross and then crossed for Evans who finished with ease.

Lappin was again on the scoresheet as she controlled a diagonal ball from Fernon well on her chest before placing her shot into the bottom corner for a well taken goal. City’s all time goalscorer has now netted an incredible 143 times in only 129 starts for her club.

Soon City were 7-0 ahead. Another good run and cross by Evans found Leanne Ross and she finished well inside the box.

Rachel Corsie then had the final say scoring City’s eighth and securing a hat-trick. Yet another City corner was played into the Boroughmuir box and Corsie was on hand to finish with the help of a slight deflection.

Commenting on the win, City Boss Peter Caulfield said, “I was really pleased with today’s result on what was a very difficult pitch. It was very hard to pass well on such a bumpy surface, so we are pleased with eight goals and another clean sheet.”

City’s next match is against Kilmarnock this Thursday at Glasgow Green. Kick off 8pm.
