City start League in style
Champions Glasgow City got the defence of their title off to a perfect start with a 8-0 victory over Inverness City at Petershill.
In the opening minute, City showed their great passing ability when they cut Inverness apart with almost every outfield player involved in excellent build up play which resulted in striker Jane Ross having a short on goal which was well saved by Kim Jappy in the Inverness nets.
Further chances came and went for City before Ross did opening the scoring on seven minutes. A clever flick from Christie Murray released Lisa Evans and she set up Ross to fire home.
Murray was involved again moments later but her left foot shot was saved by Jappy. Evans then tried her luck from the edge of the box, but Jappy did well again pushing the effort around the post for a corner. From the resultant set-piece Emma Mitchell headed just wide.
Goal number two eventually came and it was Jane Ross again. Played in by Mitchell, Ross turned her marker before striking low past Jappy for a cool finish.
Five minutes before the break and namesake Leanne Ross made it 3-0 for the home team, when she controlled a Jane Ross pass and shot into the bottom corner with her second touch.
Half time 3-0
It took the home side seventeen minutes after the re-start to get their next goal, but it was worth waiting for as full back Emma Mitchell rose highest to power home a header from Emma Fernon’s cross.
Goal number five was arguably the strike of the day when Christie Murray fired a free-kick into the top corner from the far left hand side of the box. It was Murray’s first competitive domestic goal for her new side and no doubt the start of many more in orange colours.
Lauren McMurchie was next to open her account for the season with a great half volley from the edge of the box and Clare Gemmell almost got her first of the season when she made a good run beyond the strikers, only to see her left foot shot go narrowly wide of the post.
Emma Fernon scored goal seven. A good run by Lisa Evans saw the young City and Scotland striker keep the ball in play before playing in Jane Ross who in turn set up Fernon and she fired low into the bottom corner.
With less than five minutes remaining Lisa Evans rounded off the scoring for the Champions. Substitute Eilish McSorley played Jane Ross into the box and the City striker turned her defender, beat another and then passed to Evans who fired low past Jappy.
Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black commented on the match. He said, “Today’s result gets us up and running for the defence of the title. Eight goals and a clean sheet for the second game in a row is certainly not a bad start to the campaign and something I hope we can build on and improve as the season progresses.”
