City slice through Killie
Glasgow City continued their impressive form of late by putting Premier League bottom club, Kilmarnock, to the sword today at Hurlford Park, running out 16-0 winners against a team who unless their fortunes change quickly are staring down the barrel of relegation.
Starting with great intent, City had Kilmarnock on the back foot from the first whistle and the early exchanges confirmed this would be a long day for the Ayrshire club. The first goal duly arrived on the eight minute mark when a Leanne Ross run and cross was met by Suzanne Lappin who volleyed home from six yards.
Two goals in two minutes followed quickly when Leanne Ross scored from the penalty spot after Ruesha Littlejohn was felled in the box before a deep cross from Lauren McMurchie found Sue Lappin at the back post who powered a header back across the keeper.
City striker, Leanne Ross then made it two out of two from the spot after Jane Ross was pushed in the box.
Sue Lappin added two more to her tally after converting headers from great crosses from Emma Mitchell and Emma Fernon.
Lauren McMurchie was next on the score sheet with a 20 yard drive which flew past the keeper before Jane Ross scored with a great turn and shot from the edge of the box after a fantastic Sue Lappin set up.
The first half scoring was completed by Leanne Ross when she tapped home after the Killie keeper spilled a Rachel Corsie effort.
Half time 0- 9
Not long after the restart City added to their considerable advantage, when full back Emma Mitchell bundled home after a Fernon corner.
Midfielder Clare Gemmell then scored her first of the day as she fired home from the edge of the box after another Lappin set up. Leanne Ross continued her excellent form in front of goal slotting home after team mate Jane Ross brought the ball down brilliantly in the box.
Ruesha Littlejohn added her name to score sheet, getting on the end of a Lappin pass and then Lappin completed her own tally, getting her fifth of the day, powering home another header.
Leanne Ross equalled Lappin’s five goals, when she converted another City penalty after substitute Lisa Evans was brought down in the Killie box.
Gemmell completed the scoring, adding her side’s 16th and her own second of the day, when she fired a rocket into the top corner from 25 yards, to round off an excellent goal scoring performance from the Champions.
City manager Peter Caulfield was obviously delighted with the victory and commented, “We controlled the game from kick off today and Kilmarnock were not really an attacking threat throughout the match. We passed the ball relatively well on a very sticky pitch and overall I was delighted with the application and professionalism of the players.”
