City safely into third round of Scottish Cup
Scottish Cup holders Glasgow City progressed safely through to the third round of the Scottish Cup after defeating East Fife 5-0 at Petershill Park.
The home side opened the scoring through Leanne Ross as the City Captain made a great run from midfield into the East Fife box before coolly slotting into the bottom corner to give her side the lead after only 3 minutes.
Some good play from City soon made it 2-0. Lisa Robertson played a chip pass into the run Ruesha Littlejohn and as the City striker looked ready to pull the trigger, she played it back to Robertson who fired past Pamela Gibson in the East Fife nets.
Two minutes later and Jo Love made it 3-0 with an excellent strike from distance into the bottom corner.
Leanne Ross got her second of the match and her side’s fourth after only 12 minutes on the clock as she scored straight from a corner kick to get her tenth goal of the season so far.It was a lightening start from City to quickly put the game beyond doubt as East Fife struggled to get to grips with their higher league opposition.
Unfortunately the first half was marred by early substitutions for Nicky Docherty and Ruesha Littlejohn as both were forced to go off injured, but hopefully will be fit enough to be back in the squad for next week’s last SWPL match before the break.
Despite creating numerous chances hitting the post and the underside of the bar twice, City were to only add one more goal to their tally as Suzanne Lappin rose expertly to head home a pin point Leanne Ross cross to make the final score 5-0 to the Scottish Cup holders.
Commenting on the match, City First Team Assistant Coach, Donald Jennow said, “First and foremost we have achieved our aim of getting into the next round of the hat. It is always difficult to break down teams that are organised and defending deep. We created a number of chances, although maybe didn’t take as many as we would have hoped. What was positive was that we restricted our opposition in attack and they recorded no attempts on goal, which is testament to the organisation and dominance that our team showed throughout the whole game. We have one last challenge against Falkirk to come before the midseason break and if we take the same level of commitment and professionalism into that match we have a good chance of maintaining our 100% record into the break.”
City are next in action on Sunday 30th June as they take on Falkirk at Recreation Park, Alloa, 2pm.
