City Reserves back to winning ways

Glasgow City Reserves got back to winning ways yesterday, with an impressive 5-0 win over Buchan.

After the disappointment of last weekends defeat away toRaith Rovers, City boss Fiona Baker had stressed all week the importance of re-grouping and getting a maximum three points from the home match against Buchan, and the team did not disappoint.

City started strongly, dominating play with some good possession and a fewchances on goal in the first 15 minutes. Buchan however, were proving resilient and managed to withstand the City attacks until ten minutes before half time, when City finally managed to make the breakthrough.

Laura Crossan broke free down the right with her pace proving too much for the visitors and as she cut into the box she coolly slotted past the keeper from six yards.

Four minutes later, Captain Linda O’Donnell, filling in up front for the day, doubled her side’s advantage, finishing from close range after a well worked move involving Crossan and Debbie Garment.

City keeper Nikki O’Donnell was called upon just before the end of the first half when the Buchan attack managed to get through one and one, but O’Donnell pulled off a fantastic save from close range to ensure the score remained 2-0 to City at the half time break.

The second period started similar to the first with City dominating play with some good passing football. Buchan to their credit, never gave up and managed to come back into the game in with a few long range efforts on the City goal, which O’Donnell dealt with easily.

City made it 3-0 with Captain O’Donnell on target again on 54 minutes, latching on to a well timed pass from Garment and slotting home from inside the box

A few minutes later and Crossan also grabbed a brace, when she picked up a deflected shot on the edge of the penalty box before smashing a great right foot volley into the back of the net.

With City now 4-0 up, the visitors tried hard to get back into the game, but O’Donnell in the City nets was having an excellent match and dealt with anything Buchan were able to throw at her.

The game became more open towards the end of the match as the warm day began to take its toll on both sets of players, creating more chances for both sides.

City scored number five through midfielder Debbie Garment when she broke through one on one with the Buchan keeper and executed a fine lob into the back of the net from 15 yards out.

Boss Fiona Baker commented on the match. She said, “Today it was important to get maximum points from the game. Last week and in fact in previous games we seem to dominate play but didn’t get the rewards we deserved, but today we managed to take our chances and that’s the difference between us winning and losing. Scoring five goals today will give the girls a lift and a clean sheet is also a bonus. The squad is limited at present as we have some injury issues and have numerous players unavailable for selection. It is very frustrating but it is part and parcel with football and we just need to get on with it.”
