City progress into semi
Glasgow City ensured their name is in the hat for the League Cup Semi-Final draw with a 1-0 win over Celtic at Barrowfield today.
With strong winds and a plastic pitch to contend with, City struggled against a Celtic side determined to avenge their recent 4-1 League defeat to City.
The first half was frustrating as the powerful weather conditions made it very difficult for City to play their normal passing game and chances were few for both sides.
In the second half, City managed to pass the ball a little better and finally made the breakthrough when a diagonal through ball from Suzanne Lappin into the feet of striker Ruesha Littlejohn was brilliantly converted by the forward as she chipped the ball over the out rushing Celtic keeper and into the back of the net.
City came close to adding to their lead through Suzanne Malone and Lappin, but in the end a single goal victory was enough to see Glasgow City into the next round.
Boss Peter Caulfield commented, “Today was difficult. This pitch is a poor surface to play on and the wind was terrible. However, it was the same for both teams, although it meant the crowd didn’t see much of a game today. I am pleased with the girls though. With the conditions, today was a matter of digging deep and remaining solid. I always knew we would score and thankfully we did and it was enough in the end to take us into the semi’s.”
Also progressing into the semi-final draw today are Aberdeen, who edged out Hamilton 2-1 at home. Queens Park also progress courtesy of a bye due to the withdrawal of Newburgh. The remaining quarter final between Vale of Clyde and Hibernian is still to be decided after today’s match was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
The only other match today was in the League, where Forfar defeated Raith Rovers 2-1.
