City overcome Accies
Glasgow City overcame a spirited Hamilton Accies 6-0 today at Glasgow Green.
City started strongly against Accies but struggled to convert their number of chances, with Accies throwing everything and everyone behind the ball. On the half hour, City did eventually take the lead when midielder Sue Lappin showed some excellent skill in the box before lobbing the ball over the keeper from a tight angle.
The home side hoped the goal would have changed their luck, but Hamilton held on until half time, with the post and goal line clearances their saviour on many occasions.
At the start of the second half, City did eventually get goal number two, when a Lappin shot came off the bar and striker Ruesha Littlejohn reacted first to head the rebound into the corner of the net.
Goal number three came from Jane Ross, who scored from a tight angle at the back post. Leanne Ross then scored City’s fourth and the goal of the game. Collecting the ball in midfield, Ross strode towards the Hamilton box before unleashing a 25 yard drive which went in off the underside of the crossbar.
Littlejohn scored her second of the day when she converted in the box after being set up well by Leanne Ross, to make it 5-0 to the home side.
Littlejohn then got her hat-trick and 25th goal of the season after a great run by centre half Rachel Corsie set up Sue Lappin who in turn played in Littlejohn to make it a comfortable 6-0 win over Hamilton.
Head Coach Eddie Wolecki summed up his side’s performance.
He said, “We had 32 attempts on goal today, so in terms of chances created we are delighted. However, obviously making so many opportunities we would have preferred to have converted a few more than we did. We were up against a packed defence throughout the entire 90 minutes with Hamilton playing ten players behind the ball. We had to play with patience and move the ball from side to side, which I thought we did well. Three points was the aim today and we achieved that, along with a clean sheet which is always pleasing. We now look forward to a tough game against Forfar”.
