City on Fire

Glasgow City fired their way into the Premier League Cup Semi-Final draw with an emphatic and impressive 13-0 win over Queens Park.

The score is City’s highest ever in the competition and a League Cup record and unsurprisingly delighted Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black. He said, “First and foremost we wanted into the next round and we achieved this. Considering we never had the players together for the last two weeks I felt it was a really polished performance, especially in the second half when we controlled the play and created numerous chances. It shows that all the work done on the training ground so far this year is hopefully starting to come together and I am very pleased with today’s performance.”

City opened the scoring through Denise O’Sullivan. Denied a penalty in the opening few minutes, the Republic of Ireland international volleyed into the back of the net after Suzanne Lappin had knocked down a Nicky Docherty cross with only 9 minutes on the clock.

Fiona Brown netted number two and in turn scored her first competitive goal for the club when excellent play from O’Sullivan released Emma Black down the right and the full back crossed for Lappin who once again provided an assist for a team mate as she set up Brown to shoot low and hard past Queens Park keeper Laura Williamson.

Lappin herself got on the scoresheet five minutes before the break heading home a Leanne Ross corner. The City and Scotland midfielder was on target again just after the re-start with a fine glancing header from a Leanne Crichton cross to put her side four goals clear.

City made 6-0 within three minutes when Jo Love scored two headers from two corner kicks as the home side struggled to cope with the succession of deliveries into their box.

A classy finish from Brown ensured goal number seven as she converted after a long ball over the top of the Queens Park defence. Brown then turned provider as she set up Ross to get her first and City’s eight goal of the game.

O’Sullivan got her second of the match on 78 minutes tapping in a Lappin set-up from a Docherty cross and substitute Danica Dalziel made her mark with a rocket from 25 yards almost bursting the back of the net to give City goal number ten.

O’Sullivan proved provider for Dalziel to score number eleven with ten minutes remaining and Leanne Ross ensured her hat-trick with two further goals in the final minutes of the match.

The draw for the semi-finals took place this week at Hampden and Glasgow City will face Aberdeen on Sunday 11th May. The venue and kick off have still to be confirmed. In the remaining semi-final Celtic will take on Hibernian.
