City single, 'City of Dreams' available TODAY
Scottish singer / songwriter Sharon Martin has penned a track for Scotland’s top women’s football team, Glasgow City FC, which has been released on iTunes today. The song has been recorded to raise funds for the team as they embark on their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign which begins in August, with City 1stseeds in their qualifying group – an amazing feat for an amateur side, who will be competing against the most elite teams of Europe.
Martin was a player for City when the club was first established in 1998 and was pleased to help out her old team:
“I have a lot of fond memories of playing for Glasgow City and it is really inspiring to all Scots out there to see a team from Glasgow reach the highest level of European football, funded entirely by players and fans. As a singer/songwriter, it was a compliment to be asked to write a song to help raise funds but also to help inspire the team. The players and coaches put in so much time training and playing and are so committed to the cause, I thought that a song that reflected this passion would be apt.”
The original plan was for Sharon and her band to headline a gig taking place in October to help raise funds, but the addition of a single to the activity has been an exciting development.
Martin explains: “We were putting the final touches to a line-up of artists for a fundraiser gig to take place in October for the club and the topic of a song came up. Now here we are 2 weeks later with a final track ready to go.”
Martin has recently been working with LA and UK based producers on finishing recording her own material as well as fronting Grammy winning record producer Stephen Lironi's electro disco outfit 'Flesh', but was happy to take time out to spend on the song, titled ‘City of Dreams’. She collaborated with Paul Reece, a Scottish producer / songwriter and also guitarist in her band who created the music with Martin penning the lyrics.
‘City of Dreams’ will be available to download from today, 5th August. An acoustic version of the track will be available shortly.
Notes: Glasgow City FC are the most successful Scottish side in history and have won the last four consecutive Premier League titles. In 2008 they reached the last sixteen of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, the only amateur team at that stage of the competition. On Tuesday 9th August, they head out to Serbia to take on the Champions of Serbia - Spartak Jaffa, the Champions of Malta - Mosta, and the Champions of the Faroe Islands – Klaksvik. Only the top team in each group is guaranteed to progress to the knock out stage of the competition.
