City get three points before Europe

Glasgow City got three points today with an 8-1 win over Hutchison Vale before they head off to the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Tuesday.

City almost scored their fastest goal ever when Hutchie gave the ball away from kick off, but the Hutchie keeper got their just in time, with only seven seconds on the clock.

City fans didn’t have too long to wait however for the deadlock to be broken when on 3 minutes the lively Christie Murray spun at the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable left foot shot into the back of the net.

Hutchie almost got a surprise equaliser soon after when casual play at the back nearly allowed Hutchie in, with Claire Johnstone in the City nets forced to make a save from close range.

City never learned from their mistake and on 11 minutes Hutchison equalised, again from a City defensive mistake which gifted striker Nicola Russell a goal from 2 yards out.

City almost regained the lead when some good interchange between the City players saw Jo Love, shoot just past the post. However, City did go in front seconds later, when Kat Lindner’s good run into the box was found by Murray and Lindner fired home.

A great counter attack by City almost put them 3-1 up. Lindner played infield to Murray who turned and found the run of Lindner, who beat the player on the touch line and crossed to Leanne Ross who back heeled it into the run of Danica Dalziel, but her low shot just went wide.

After the half hour Jo Love scored number 3 for City, with arguably the best strike of her City career when she fired a right foot unstoppable shot into the top corner from 30 yards.

Love then got her second of the match and City’s fourth finishing off a fine passing move with Murray at the heart of it once more.

Leanne Ross made it 5-1 before half time when she rounded the keeper to score with ease.

Half time 5-1.

Fifteen minutes after the restart, City made it 6-1, when Emma Mitchell fired home after a long run from deep.

Moments later, it was 7-1 when Jane Ross finished well after striding into the box. Kat Lindner got goal number 8, finishing off the play of the match as City opened Hutchie up with some brilliant passing and movement.

Full Time 8-1.

Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki Black commented on the match. He said, “I am more delighted that this game is over and done with than anything else and that we have three points. Generally we have underperformed ever year before Europe and sadly today was no exception. The key thing was the three points, but I am really disappointed with the way we performed, but maybe we needed to get this out of our system before we go.”
