City defeat Rangers

Glasgow City maintained their 100% start to the League campaign with a 8-0 win over Rangers at Glasgow Green.

City opened the scoring in under 4 minutes when a low throw was flicked on by Rachel Corsie to Leanne Ross to volley home at the near post.

Rangers first attempt came two minutes later when a long range free kick was hit well over the City bar. However, apart from a few forays up the park for the away side, this was a match thoroughly controlled by City, who should have probably converted a far greater number of their chances.

Donna James had a 30 yard strike saved by Lucy Cook in the Rangers net and Rachel Corsie was also denied by Cook after a shot in the box following a City corner. Leeanne Campbell was the next City player to come close, but her right foot shot hit the side netting.

City did however eventually add to their lead twenty minutes in, when a cross by Leanne Ross was headed back across goal by Kat Lindner to James who in turn set up Jane Ross who hit a unstoppable drive into the back of the net.

Lindner was then twice denied by Cook in quick succession, but James soon made it 3-0 to City. Lindner played the ball wide to Campbell who cut the ball back from the by-line for James to score.

Just  before half time Lindner was denied one v one with Cook, but got her revenge a moment later when a great pass from Clare Gemmell released Jane Ross and the City and Scotland striker set up team mate Lindner to score from 6 yards.

Half time 4-0.

Three minutes after the re-start and City added to their lead. A good ball from Leanne Ross to Lindner, saw the German striker cut in at the edge of the box and hit a low hard drive into the net, to get her second of the match.

On 59 minutes Rangers were denied by Laura Williamson in the City net when the stopper was called into action to save well at close range.

Leanne Ross almost got a brace, after being sent clean through by Lindner but Cook saved once more in the Rangers goals.

With 25 minutes left, Jane Ross made it 6-0 to the home side when she lobbed the outrushing Cook after a neat flick by Corsie sent her through on goal.

Centre half Eilish McSorley got her first goal of the season converting well after a City set-piece and Jane Ross finished on a hat-trick when she rounded Cook to make it 8-0 to the home side.

Boss Peter Caulfield was delighted with the win. He said, “We scored early which was good and settled the side. We took the game on from then, but we could have passed better in the first half if I am honest and chosen better options at times. This improved in the second and helped us play the game higher up the park and we created far more chances. Overall I am delighted with another win in the League and a clean sheet.”
