City beat Hutchie to go top
Glasgow City returned from the Capital today with three points and top of the SWPL following a 5-0 win over Hutchison Vale.
On a pitch, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black described as the worst his side have ever played on, City controlled the match, creating 37 chances in total.
With four games on the pitch since Friday, officials from both teams desperately tried to fill the number of holes on an atrocious playing surface, which will no doubt soon be examined by the Premier League with regards to its suitability for top flight football.
Newly promoted Hutchie battled well in the match, with their keeper making a number of excellent stops but in the end it was not enough to prevent the Premier League holders winning by a comfortable goal margin.
City opened the scoring midway through the first half when Leanne Ross played a through ball to midfield team made Lauren McMurchie and the Under 19 Scotland International chipped the keeper for her first of the day.
Despite 18 shots in the first half, the home side managed to go in at the interval only one goal down.
In the second period, City bombarded the Hutchie defence once more and on 68 minutes added to their lead. Lisa Evans, who was having a fine individual game, cut the ball back to Leanne Ross. Her shot came back off the cross bar and McMurchie fired in the rebound to make it 2-0 to City.
One minute later Emma Woolley played in Jane Ross and the young Scottish international shot past the Hutchie keeper for her fourth of the season.
Goal number four came shortly after, when Captain Rachel Corsie headed home an Evans cross.
The only downside to City’s well earned victory was the loss of Rachel Corsie, with the City Captain forced off injured with fifteen minutes to go to be replaced by Eilish McSorley.
Overall it was a comprehensive victory for the Champions and one which moves them to the top of the Premier League table.
Commenting on the match, Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, “For as long as it was 1-0, it was frustrating as we had so many chances. But as soon as it was 2-0, the players became more relaxed. Since the beginning of the new campaign we have had three clean sheets and scored 21 goals, so I have to be delighted with our start. This was as bad a pitch as we will probably every play on, so I am delighted the girls were still able to create so many chances and in the end win comfortably.”
