City Under 13's start with a win
Glasgow City Under 13’s made their debut today in the Scotland West Under 13 Youth League and got the season off to a flyer with a 1-0 win over Glasgow Girls.
After bad weather delayed the start to the season last week, City's new under 13’s team finally took to the field for their first competitive game of the season today at Crownpoint Road. Their opposition was a well organised and very physical Glasgow Girls side, who had won their previous game 20-0. The City youngsters however seemed to remain totally unfazed by this fact and went out fighting from the very first whistle.
The first half was a nerve racking affair with both sides having their fair share of chances, with Lauren Bullock in the City goal pulling off some fine saves. City moved the ball well, playing from the back and were also able to create chances further up the field. Every player in a City shirt worked hard and adjusted well to the changes that were made on 15min to keep it all square at the half way point.
Half time 0-0
The second half started off in pretty much in the same manner as the first with both teams having their share of possession and chances at goal. However, as the game went on it was the City youngsters who stepped up and began to take control, with great link up play through the middle putting the Glasgow Girls side under a lot of pressure in particular. After waves of attack City were finally rewarded for their efforts when a scramble in the box resulted in Murron Cunningham slotting home with the left foot from close range to open the scoring for City.
Full time 1-0
Speaking after the match, Coach Ciara Barnes commented “Today’s game showed promising signs for our girls and everyone in the team put in a great performance. Myself and the other staff are very proud of their effort and commitment and how much they are listening to the guidance we try and give them. Next week, we start our Cup campaign at home to Drumchapel Reds and hope the girls can put in the same kind of performance again.
Glasgow City Under 15’s were also in action today drawing 2-2 away to Glasgow Girls Under 15 side in Shettleston. City's goals came from Michelle Bradley and Lauren Ray.
