City Reserves start well to win against Toryglen
Against cold wind and icy rain on Thursday night, City Reserves got off to a great start against visitors Toryglen, going ahead after just two minutes of play. A long ball forward found Laura Crossan in the clear and she raced in on goal nutmegging the keeper as she came out and rolling the ball into the net.
The City forward, almost repeated the trick a few minutes later when another long ball picked her out, but this time the Toryglen keeper was able to gather. The visitors then won a corner with their first attack of the match and proceeded to put some pressure on the City rearguard.
Despite being forced to defend, City did manage to break out with a good weaving run from Sarah Major who then laid the ball into the path of Lyndsey Anderson but the young striker’s shot was blocked.
City attacked again when Nicola Coia, pushing up the right was fouled and the resulting free kick almost found Leanne Hughes. The same player came close a few minutes later when she headed a corner kick just wide.
Just before the end of the half, Laura Crossan broke clear down the right to send the ball into the area for a couple of City players to have a stab at goal. The ball eventually came back toCrossan herself, but her resultant shot flew straight into the arms of the keeper
Toryglen pushed further forward in the second half but didn’t seem to be able to trouble the City defence. The visitors best efforts came from a couple of long range shots, but Stef Hardie in the City nets was up to the task. Toryglen’s push for the equaliser meant City were able to counter attack and were unlucky not to get a second goal and put the game out of reach.
Linda O'Donnell fired a free kick out on the left of the penalty area which went into the side net. Then Debbie Garment went on a good run down the right but her cut back in to the area went behind the on rushing Leeanne Hughes. Laura Crossan again found a few more openings for herself, with her best opportunity being a chipped shot past the keeper which went agonisingly wide of the post. Crossan was also denied a further twice by good saves from the Toryglen keeper.

City Boss Fiona Baker commented after the match, “We started the game strongly tonight. Managing to keep possession well gave us the opportunity to score early in the game and in return this helped settle the girls early on. As the game progressed It never looked like Toryglen could really threaten our back four and this showed with their efforts on goal being from long range or set plays.
We had at least five or six good chances to kill the game but couldn't find the back of the net.
I was pleased with the performance and it was nice to get a win off the back of our defeat last week.”
