City Reserves into 3rd round
Glasgow City Reserves followed the first team into the hat for the Unite Scottish Cup 3rd round draw with a 2-0 victory over League rivals Troon.
City were up against it even before the match began with a number of players missing through injury and other commitments. This meant a bare minimum squad was fit and available to boss Fiona Baker.
Already having played Troon this season, where City sneaked a win with the last kick of the ball against a strong, physical Troon side, it was obvious the Cup match was going to be a tough game for Wood’s side.
However, with only 12 minutes on the clock, City got off to the perfect start, when Louise Thompson climbed highest to powerfully head home a Lisa Hendry corner kick. As in previous matches, the early goal settled City and they dominated play for long spells with Troon venturing forward infrequently.
City pushed hard to double their advantage but some poor finishing, which had been City’s downfall last week, crept into their play and they struggled to get the goals their possession and play deserved.
This changed however, when Louise Thompson was fouled just inside the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Lisa Hendry stepped up to take the resultant penalty and coolly slotted it away to give her team the vital two goal cushion.
Half time 2-0
The second half was a more even affair with both sides creating chances but unable to find the back of the net.
City Boss Fiona Baker said, “I was delighted to get the win as I felt and not for the first time this season, that we were up against it with the squad at bare minimum. But the girls pulled together and put in a decent performance which was important after last weeks disappointing league defeat. We now look forward to the draw to see who we play in the 3rd round.”
