City Girls get Premier Scalp
Glasgow City Girls today defeated Premier League side Boroughmuir 2-0 at Glasgow Green to join the City first team in the Quarter Finals of the Unite Scottish Cup.
Second Division side, City Girls, formed only at the start of this season had their first ever match against a Premier League side and just like every other team they have faced this season, made sure it was a win for the City youngsters.
City started really well and dominated the first 45 minutes but to their frustration were unable to convert the number of chances they created.
At the start of the second half they did however make amends for the first half misses, when Mel Stirling got in behind the fullback and crossed beautifully for striker Lisa Evans to convert her header past the Boroughmuir keeper.
City then made it 2-0 when another fine cross from Stirling was controlled by midfielder Lauren McMurchie. However, just when the attacking midfielder was about to pull the trigger she was bundled down from behind, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot.
McMurchie herself converted the resultant penalty making it 2-0 to the home side and City went on to control the match and see out the remainder of the tie.
Full time 2-0.
City Girls boss Richie Evans was pleased with his side’s win.
He said, “To defeat any side at this stage of the Cup is a fantastic achievement but to defeat a Premier League side is outstanding for this very young team. Time and time again this season they have shown how much quality they have and every single one of them has a very bright future in the game. My only disappointment was our inability to kill the game off earlier. We had numerous opportunities in the first half and I don’t know if it was nerves playing against a team in the top league, but we were unable to put away any of them and that was frustrating. However, we are now the only Second Division side still in the competition and one of only two non-Premier sides in the draw for the Quarter Finals. With both the City sides winning today, my only hope is that we don’t draw each other in the next round.”
