City girls ease into semi-finals

Glasgow City Girls today eased into the SWFL League Cup Semi-Finals after their 7-3 win over Troon at Glasgow Green.

Once again City got off to the perfect start and took the lead through striker Lisa Evans after she was released by Emma Mitchell. City then added a second through Emma McMonigle who slotted home after a good pass from centre-half Eilish McSorley.

McMonigle then added her second of her day and City’s third when she converted from another set-up by Emma Mitchell.

The first half then got even better for City, when their constant pressure on the Troon goal resulted in yet another corner, which the Troon keeper was unable to deal with, parrying the ball into the back of her own net.

Half time 4-0.

In the second half, City continued to dominate and Eilish McSorley scored City’s fifth converting with a fine header following a free kick by Lisa Evans.

City then took their focus off the job in hand and allowed Troon back in the match and the visitors took their chances well converting three goals to bring them back into the game at 5-3.

With a semi-final at stake, City stepped up their game and two goals from Scotland Under 17 internationalist Emma Mitchell restored City’s fine lead, to end the game 7-3 to Glasgow City.

Girls boss Richie Evans was delighted his side are in their first ever semi-final but had concern with his team's lack of concentration which almost allowed Troon back into the match.

He said, ”Eight weeks ago we had not even kicked a ball together yet as a team, so to be in a semi-final of this calibre is fantastic. We are still a new side, so it takes time to gel properly, but once again we showed we can score goals. We have scored 60 goals in only 6 matches which is absolutely outstanding. Troon are a tough side, but I thought we more than merited our win today. The only downside was almost allowing them back into the game and we need to ensure we do not lose focus at any point in a match, no matter how many goals we are ahead. However, I feel I cannot criticise the team too much as this was another great performance. We also had some players out through injury, so we can be even stronger. Whoever we get in the semi-final will no doubt prove to be our hardest match of the season so far, but we look forward to it immensely.”
