Captain makes 250th start
Glasgow City captain, Laura Montgomery, led her team out for the Scottish Cup 2nd round match against Boroughmuir Thistle on Sunday, in what was her 250th start for the club.
Having formed the club in 1998 with club chairperson Carol Anne Stewart, while she recovered from cruciate knee ligament surgery, the milestone of 250 games for the club would surely have been far from her thoughts, however, with 4 League titles, 3 Scottish cup and 2 League cup winners medals to her name, as well as numerous appearances in the UEFA Women’s Champions League; Laura has managed to turn a dream of forming her own club into a fantastic success story.
Team manager Peter Caulfield paid tribute to Laura when he said, “Not only is the milestone of 250 games for Glasgow City a phenomenal achievement for Laura but she has achieved this while wearing many other hats at the club, from marketing the club to obtaining sponsorship, to club treasurer, among many other roles.
“Laura is the glue that binds all the parts of this club together and to be able to do everything she does for the club and still be able to train 5 nights a week and pull on her boots each weekend speaks volumes for her as an individual.
“Everyone at this club; players, staff and especially myself, has Laura to thank for all the success we have achieved.
“At 34 years of age Laura has perhaps reached the seasoned stage of her career but everyone at this club knows that if called upon to play she will be as focused, committed and as determined as any player on the pitch to produce the best performance she can and get a winning result for the team.
“There is certainly the potential for Glasgow City players in the future to pass whatever target Laura eventually sets for appearances at the club but no one will ever be more an integral part of the fabric at Glasgow City."
